I didn't know the 1990 to 93 years where different from the 94 to 96. I've heard the 97's being stronger and Chris (NJ ) has one. Anyone else know of this and is the 94 to 96 better than first years models? I need a tranny for the Black Z and I'm thinking buying new is better than rebuilt, yet don't want to in up in the same boat of SYNCROS going out from speed shifting down the line ( say a year from now ). From reader's site. Infamous 4th -> 5th or Vis-Versa Gear Grind If you own a 1990-1993 300ZX, chances are pretty good you have a gear grind occasionally (or all the time, depending on how bad it is) in the upper gear ranges. This is caused by Borg-Warner (manufactures Z trannies, which I think sucks in my opinion) using a soft metal for the 4th and 5th gear syncromesh. The 1994-1996s fixed this by replacing the metal with something that was stronger. There is real hard solution but to replace the bad syncro(s) but you can get around this almost 95%+ of the time. A company called Redline makes 2 types of transmission fluid that will PROBABLY solve your grinding and make shifting a lot smoother and easier in cold weather. The two are called MT-90 and MTL. Both are GL4 fluids, but the MTL is much slippier, allowing better shifting, less griding but has BEEN KNOWN TO WEAR BEARINGS AND THE SYNCROS. This is a "Last Ditch" operation - if you know the tranny's gotta be rebuilt soon, might as well throw it in there to make it last a little longer. The other fluid, MT-90, will not cause bearing and synco wear. It has solved almost all of my grinding, except when I really do a FAST upshift, 4th-5th. Other than that, it is perfect, and the car is so much easier to drive when transmission is cold. Use dealercode 675421 to get 10% off your order. You'll need 3 bottles of either MTL or MT-90 depending on your choice. The TECH to install it is at TwinTurbo.NET.
